Even bad people can care about someone. This is a message that is clear in Artemis Fowl The Arctic Incident. Although I have yet to finish this book, what I have read shows this clearly. The main character, Artemis, deeply cares about his father and looks up to him, despite being considered public enemy number one by the fairies. The author, Eoin Colfer, was once an elementary teacher and lives in Ireland. This book is in a series and this is the second one. I have not read the other books in the series.
The author of Artemis Fowl The Arctic Incident is a man named Eoin Colfer. He was born in and still currently lives in Ireland. Both of his parents were teachers. His father taught in elementary school and his mother was a drama teacher. This was likely what influenced him to become a teacher himself. The first book he wrote was called Benny And Omar. He first became interested in writing when he was in elementary school when he would make stories about vikings. He gained fame when he started the Artemis Fowl series, but he eventually got the opportunity to write the sixth addition to Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.
In the story Artemis Fowl The Arctic Incident, Artemis gets an important clue about his missing father. After an unrelated event involving the fairy police, Artemis gets asked to help because they need his help to uncover an illegal battery business. One of the fairies that would be working with I’m will be a fairy called Captain Holly Short, who holds a grudge against Artemis for past crimes he’s committed. Artemis agrees to help only if they can help him find his father. After the fairy police agree to this deal, Artemis and the fairies work together.
In this fantasy genre book, I’ve noticed a few things that make this really enjoyable to read. First, The writing style is very easy to get immersed in, with detailed descriptions of people and situations. An example of a detailed situation would be this excerpt from the book.
“ Holly raced toward her fallen comrade, projectiles buzzing around her head like supersonic bees. Generally, in a situation of this kind, the last thing you do would be to move to the victim, but with gunfire raining down on them, there was no choice. Holly grabbed the private by his epaulets, hauling him behind a rusted-out delivery shuttle.”
I think this was a great decision by the author because this helps the story to be memorable and helps develop picture of just how situations play out. Another thing I noticed that was a good decision in this book was the amount of comedy used. There is some comedic moments in the story, but not enough to dull when a situation is serious.
“There was a noise on the the stars above. Someone coming this way. Butler wasn’t unduly concerned, nevertheless he slid a palm inside his jacket, fingers resting on his hand gun’s grip. It was unlikely he would need it. Even the most boisterous young bucks generally gave butler a wide berth. Something to do with his merciless eyes. being almost seven feet tall didn’t hurt either.
A group of teenagers rounded the corner.
“Excusez moi,” said Butler, gallantly stepping aside.
The girls giggled. The boys glared. One. a unibrowed rugby type, even thought about passing comment. Then Butler winked at him. It was a peculiar wink, somehow simultaneously cheerful and terrifying. No comments passed.”
This balance of comedy was a really good decision by the author. The author also included a lot of action and tension in this story, which makes it more exciting and fast paced. The perspective of this book is third person omniscient, which I think works well for a story like this. the reader is able to get a good understanding of what’s going on.
In general, I really enjoy this book so far, and look forward to reading more of it in the future. I think that the type of reader that would enjoy the book is someone who likes action and detail in their fantasy stories.
